چکیده

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data can offer a means to estimate subcanopy fuel characteristics support site characterization, quantification of treatment or fire effects, and inform modeling. Using field TLS within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve (PNR), this study explores impact forest phenology density shrub height (i.e., bed depth) measurements on estimating average heights at plot-level using multiple linear regression metrics derived from ground-classified normalized point clouds. The results highlight importance sampling when these are used train empirical models characterize characteristics. We document larger prediction intervals (PIs), higher root mean square error (RMSE), lower R-squared with reduction in number randomly selected reference samples available each plot. At least 10 random collected situ were needed produce accurate precise predictions, while 20 ideal. Additionally, leaf-on generally provided more predictions than those calculated leaf-off plots landscape. This highlights design will be for extrapolation new sites plots.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Vegetation Sampling

We developed new vegetation indices utilizing terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to quantify the three-dimensional spatial configuration of plant communities. These indices leverage the novelty of TLS data and rely on the spatially biased arrangement of a TLS point cloud. We calculated these indices from TLS data acquired within an existing long term manipulation of forest structure in Central Or...

Filling Lacunas in Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data:

Laser scanning methodology allows to reconstruct the metric characteristics of objects at different LOD (Level Of Detail) providing spatially dense points clouds. In particular, the terrestrial application carried out in the last years have demonstrated the potentialities of the methodology useful in many different sectors. This tecnique has been used also for the “Cavallo ligneo” of the “Palaz...

Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Plot-Scale Forest Measurement

Plot-scale measurements have been the foundation for forest surveys and reporting for over 200 years. Through recent integration with airborne and satellite remote sensing, manual measurements of vegetation structure at the plot scale are now the basis for landscape, continental and international mapping of our forest resources. The use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for plot-scale measure...

Terrestrial laser scanning to estimate plot-level forest canopy fuel properties

This paper evaluates the potential of a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) to characterize forest canopy fuel characteristics at plot level. Several canopy properties, namely canopy height, canopy cover, canopy base height and fuel strata gapwere estimated. Different approaches were tested to avoid the effect of canopy shadowing on canopy height estimation caused by deployment of the TLS below the...

Analysis of the Backscattered Energy in Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data

Terrestrial laser scanning provides a point cloud, but usually also the “intensity” values are available. These values are mainly influenced by the distance from sensor to object and by the object’s reflection properties. We demonstrate that it is possible to retrieve these reflection properties from the observed range and the intensity value. An experiment with targets of known reflectivity be...
